Spirulina

Aurospirul Our spirulina is produced in Auroville - a spiritual community in South India based on the philosophy of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother. Consume it, savour its magnificent taste and enjoy knowing that it is grown in a farm with a strong environmental ethos, which pays its workers well. Additionally, the farm donates a part of its production to the Auroville community and local schools. Our spirulina is dried in the hot and glowing Indian sun which imbues it with its special energy and wonderful taste.

What Is Spirulina?

History

Spirulina is believed to have been a food source for the Aztecs in 16th-century New Spain (part of which is now Mexico); its harvesting from Lake Texcoco and subsequent sale as cakes is described by one of Cortés' soldiers. The Aztecs called it Teocuitlatl, meaning stone's excrement. Spirulina was found in abundance at the lake by French researchers in the 1960s, but there is no reference to its use there as a daily food source after the 16th century. The first large-scale Spirulina production plant, run by Sosa Texcoco, was established there in the early 1970s.

How much spirulina should I take to start with?

A teaspoon of spirulina powder is 3 grams and each capsule contains half a gram so starting with a teaspoon of spirulina and up to 6 caps a day is a good way to start (in general, 1 - 5 grams a day is a good starting dose). Once you get going, it's quite common to consume up to 10 grams a day.

Apple Juice

1 tsp spirulina powder
250 ml apple juice

Mix together in a glass until smooth. Enjoy your drink!

Interfaith Ministry Holistic Asia editor, Peter Lloyd, is an ordained minister from the London Interfaith Seminary. The interfaith seminary is part of a growing movement whose aim is to serve all those who are not formally religious but still retain a strong spiritual or God focussed orientation. Peter's ministerial vow is to 'love fully and serve God'. He is available to prepare ceremonies such as weddings, baby namings, funerals and divorce/separation. He also offers spiritual counselling.
